Isaias to go to Sudan to discuss Ethio-Egypt crisis
24 June 2020 – (EP) Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki will travel to Sudan tomorrow to talk with Sudanese leaders regarding the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as the spat between Addis Ababa and Cairo threatens the region’s security, a source tells EP.
Ethiopia wants to fill Africa’s most powerful hydroelectric dam in the next two weeks, even without a deal with Sudan and Egypt.
Sudan has long been caught between the competing interests of Egypt and Ethiopia. It stands to benefit from Ethiopia’s dam, including having access to cheap electricity and reduced flooding, but it has raised fears over the operation and safety of the Ethiopian project and says it could endanger Sudan’s own dams.
Sudan and Egypt are also at loggerheads over how much water Sudan uses – and how that amount may increase when the dam is finished.
The source said that Eritrea believes diplomacy and collaboration are the only means of resolving the water conflict between the three countries.
The United Nations (UN) on Monday urged Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan to “work together” to resolve differences over Addis Ababa’s Nile River mega-dam which has been a long-running source of regional tension.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, “we urge Egypt, we urge Ethiopia and Sudan to work together to intensify efforts to peacefully resolve outstanding differences.”
